Informative

The Czech Republic is on many people’s bucket list. The country where people live of dumplings and beer. How can a celiac possibly enjoy a safe gluten-free trip to Prague? Traveling with any dietary restriction can be challenging. Luckily, having celiac disease or eating gluten-free in Prague won’t keep you from enjoying some of the best desserts the city has to offer. For the person who doesn’t even have a sweet tooth, some of the desserts are a must to try! I put together a couple of Bakeries and coffee shops where you can grab light snacks or try delicious desserts.

Important to know

When you travel to the Czech Republic and visiting Prague, make sure you know how to translate GLUTEN-FREE! I wrote a detailed blog post about Glute-Free tips in Prague. You can find it here: Celiac? Traveling to the Czech Republic?

How to translate Gluten-Fee to Czech language

When you dine in restaurants and cafes, look for the words bezlepkové and bez lepku, as these mean without gluten. Most of the restaurants will have clearly marked allergen menus. There are more and more restaurants being entirely gluten-free dining. Hopefully, this guide to gluten-free Bakeries and Coffee shops in Prague will help you find the best spots for gluten-free food in the Czech capital.

How do you translate some Glutens to the Czech Language

Below are the most used wheat ingredients in Czech. There are many more, but I think these will be very helpful for you as a resource to start with.

  • Gluten – Lepek
  • Wheat – Pšenice
  • Semolina – Krupice
  • Oats – Oves
  • Spelt – Špalda
  • Graham
  • Rye – Žito
  • Barley – Ječmen
  • Malt in various forms including malted barley flour, malted milk or milkshakes, malt extract, malt syrup, malt flavoring, malt vinegar – Slad
  • Brewer’s Yeast – Pivovarské kvasnice
  • Contains Gluten – Obsahuje Lepek
  • Does not contain Gluten – Neobsahuje Lepek
  • Fried – Smažený [á, é]
  • Flour – Mouka
  • Bread – Chleb
  • Wafer – Oplatka
  • Bio – Organic

Caffe Waffle – Wafflin

When you are not starting a big sit-down lunch, this place is perfect for a quick meal. Super nice decorated little cafe with also a few seats outside. The staff is super nice and can talk English. They offer gluten-free, vegan waffles, and vegan toppings available as well. If you have an appetite for savory waffles instead of sweet ones, this is a good place to try savory waffles.

Note: due to Covid, they are take-out only at the moment. Btw make sure you carry cash with you as many places are cash only, like this place.

Kavarna – Coffee Park

Coffee Park offers a nice coffee with gluten-free desserts, soups, quiches, and other items as well. These deserts are all labeled if they are gluten-free right when you walk in. The kitchen does not use any ingredients containing gluten. The only two products that they have with gluten are already finished croissants and ready-made bread. Both products are prepared without contact with gluten-free foods. This is one of my favorite places for quick lunch! My daughter can enjoy Glute-Free desserts, which they change daily.

If you happen to travel with your doggie, they even offer doggie menu. They love dogs so much, that since the time they opened (2015) they donate 5 crowns from every coffee sold to “Dogs life foundation”. How sweet is that?

Babiccina Spis

This Bakery is not a far walk from Old town square. Another one of my favorite Gluten-Free bakeries. They have many traditional Czech desserts made Gluten-Free. Unfortunately. I always stop by at the bakery after all day cruising in Palladium – which is a multilevel shopping mall, and you might enjoy it as well.

They bake 100% Gluten-Free, and you can find very traditional Czech desserts. If you need light lunch, they offer sandwiches and light food as well.

Bakery – Svet Bez Lepku (World without Gluten)

Svet Bez Lepku This is not a bistro or small restaurant. It is a bakery. They are 100% gluten-Free. If you are looking for bread or baguette or even something sweet, you should check out this place for sure. You can purchase what they have in-store or order online.

Check out their website.

They have two locations, and this one is closer to the center: Prodejna Praha – Hradčanská

Bistro Den Noc ( Day Night )

Love pancakes? These are seriously so goo and heavenly pancakes. You can choose from many savory flavors and of course sweet flavors. This place is small and sometimes there is a wait to get in, but well worth of the wait. The best breakfast or brunch to start your day for sure. If you can make a reservation, do so, that way you do not need to wait if you come in busy time. Also they close at 3PM so do not count on dinner there.

Good Food, Coffe, and Bakery.

When you are in Prague, you will see Chimney Cakes ( Trdelnik ) sold everywhere! It is the best of the best. You can make it as big a Caloric bomb as you wish! Fill with Icecream or just plain empty with cinnamon sugar.

Are you asking if there is a place offering a Gluten-Free version? YES!!! There is! Right by Charles Bridge, Nearby Klementinum. I have written Post about a beautiful  Day trip in Prague, where you will walk just past this amazing Bakery. You can choose from savory or sweet. I always go for sweet as that is what I am used to. When I make them at home, I love plain basic with Cinnamon sugar. That is the best one.

Angelato – Ice-cream

Angelato is a family-run ice cream shop, and they make ice cream daily using traditional methods. For sure, the best-quality ice cream with no artificial add-ons. They offer 75 different flavors, and only 2 have gluten in them. The sorbets are also free from lactose.

Why I put ice cream here? I feel like they need a shout-out as the ice cream is delicious, but what I love about this place, they offer not traditional flavors you expect fat cream place. Have you ever tried, for example, parmesan, pumpkin, rhubarb, avocado? I had the avocado as I love everything avocado and for sure tasty cream.

Easy day trips in Czech Republic

Are you planing trip to Czech Republic? Are you a bit overwhelm what place to go visit and see? I know there is so much to see and not just in Prague! The whole country is full of beautiful Gems. Here are couple of my blog posts to help you plan some day trips.

  • The perfect day trip – Prague – In this blog post, you can plan an entire day trip for visiting Prague Castle and Lesser Town. I put places together which will help you to stay in one area and not to lose time by traveling from place to place.
  • Romantic day trip to Prague – On this Day Trip, I follow the previous post but move to the Old town square and areas around.
  • Lovely day trip – Kutna Hora – Kutna Hora is a favorite place for tourists to visit. You should definitely put it on your bucket list.

There you have it! Prague is an incredible place to visit. It is my birth home, and I love to come back year after year. My daughter is now celiac, which is making it a bit more interesting to search for favorite treats and meals, as I don’t eat regular stuff when we are together. As you can see, it is not that difficult to find places to eat at all!

You will experience a different side of Prague as you will be looking for specialty stores and restaurants. Also, you will go to places where you probably would not go searching for the perfect bakery where you can get the most delicious dessert and still eat gluten-free treats safely. Then you will look around and see another beautiful street ready to explore…

Enjoy the city and whole country!!!!

Until next time…!
